Antique Wooden Casting Moulds-Wings
These beautiful scupltures are from a collection of early 20th century hand carved wooden 'Casting Moulds’. The moulds where originally used as the master template to create ornamental pieces.
Once completed by the French artisans the wooden carvings were wrapped in papier-mache and when dry, cut in half to release the wooden cast (hence the visible cut marks on some of the carvings). The two halves would then have been joined together to create the whole figure, before being painted, covered in resin or gilded.
This collection of wings would probably have been used for figurines of angels or cherubs. The larger wing is also carved on the reverse so lends itself perfectly to being displayed in front of a mirror so its craftmanship can be fully admired. These truely are beautiful one off's that carry such wonderful history.
